SSS03 - GOBLIN - SUSPIRIA HYSTERIA

A recent viewing of 'Berberian Sound Studio' transported me back to the empty, haunting halls of the dance academy in Dario Argento's 1977 classic 'Suspiria'. Beyond the critical acclaim for Argento's inimitable stylistic flair, it's the incredible soundtrack that catapulted the film to cult status.

You'd be forgiven for thinking you'd found an old Tubular-shaped friend when you first stick on Italian prog band Goblin's opening theme, but there's something infinitely more sinister, and even more ritualistic in the playful music box tones. Your fears are confirmed when the heretical bowel boglin hired to play the autoharp starts chiming in with some backing vocals around 30 seconds in. If you can bear listening to the main 'Suspiria' theme full blast in the dark, you will be convinced that you're about to be dragged into the Abyss by the most debauched members of the demonic horde, but it'll be worth it...

By the time the heavenly synths mark your escape from the sacrifice and things start getting palpably Krauty (around 2.30) , it's as though some ancient chase has begun across the celestial spheres. You think this hyperbole sir? Put it on and find out, but be warned, it's a little like thrice “Candyman”, there's no going back...

The best thing about the 'Suspiria' soundtrack, and what it shares will all great music, is that you have no fucking idea how it was made. From the beautifully sharp percussive sounds of 'Witch' to the bending string drones of 'Sighs', the instrumentation retains an element of the unfathomable.

I could wax lyrical about the every track but I'll leave you to discover it yourself. And by yourself, I mean BY YOURSELF. Let's see how badass you are now.

I've included the theme in situ in the links to show just how powerful it is but I strongly recommend a viewing of the whole film. Do it! Do it tonight! It's ridiculous, in every, and the best possible way.

Apparently David Gordon Green starts shooting a remake this month. If it's anywhere near as good as The Wicker man remake I'll sell all my Scouting For Girls records.
